Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
