Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
