This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
